Let’s start with your roots. You grew up in Brooklyn—specifically Brownsville—a neighborhood with a legendary but notoriously gritty history. How did those streets, that environment, and that mindset shape not only the raw texture of your sound, but your entire outlook on life?

Peace, and first and foremost, thank you for allowing the time and platform to express myself and offer people a deeper understanding of who I am, both as a man and an artist. Growing up in Brownsville, more specifically Ocean Hill, Brooklyn, during the late ’80s and early ’90s, was far from a cakewalk, and even further from anything sweet. I came up during the crack era, when my community was heavily impacted by addiction, violence, and destruction. Seeing crack vials on the ground and witnessing the harsh realities of the streets became a part of my everyday life. Ocean Hill played a major role in shaping my character and my sound. My music is gritty and unfiltered, yet heartfelt and introspective, driven by emotion, logic, and real-life experiences. I’m not creating a character or selling an image, I’m expressing a reality I’ve lived and am still to an extent living in.

Growing up in Brownsville taught me the importance of awareness, accountability, and moving with intention. Was there a pivotal moment when you realized this wasn’t just a side hustle or a hobby anymore, but a true calling?

Great question. Taking rap seriously started with believing in myself and recognizing the potential of my talent. I’d trace that transition back to around 2010, when I was heavily involved in the streets, but equally immersed in graffiti and art. Those experiences, both good and bad, exposed me to different worlds and perspectives that ultimately shaped my approach to music.

I always had a way with words, in fact, I was a six-time spelling bee champion growing up, so wordplay was always in my DNA. When people already working professionally in music began acknowledging my lyrical ability, I realized I had something worth pursuing. Beyond the bars, my strength was storytelling. I brought a perspective that felt fresh while staying rooted in hip-hop’s foundation, and that authenticity helped distinguish me and earn respect among my peers.

As for motivation, my people were just as important as any artist who influenced me. My birth name also starts with an “A,” so the name felt natural, like it was already written. But SL also has another meaning tied to a certain Giant, but I’ll leave that one for later in the interview.
